Education in times of COVID-19

The continuity of education in independent living and other subjects is extremely important for the adult population with intellectual disabilities. AMPI lacks the financial means and personnel to be able to develop a complete and adequate remote educational program for our participants. However, we have reach out to several organizations such Fundación Sindrome Down, Proyecto Opciones and others that are conducting their classes virtually and, AMPI has developed collaborative agreements with them to work in partnership and benefit our population.

Soon we will be beginning to offer our residents the opportunity to receive cooking classes, basic literacy, art, dance, garden and theater classes through virtual presence. this while we can return to our daily activities centers.

In addition, we will soon begin to offer sports workshops in the sport of bocce, an Olympic sport of Special Olympics, to begin training for the next cycle of competitions. In the same way, we are doing research on what other alternatives currently exist in Puerto Rico and through the Department de Recreación y Deportes and other organizations that may be offering workshops that can keep our participants active and learning.

Thanks to the Banco Popular Foundation, the Enterline Foundation and the Edwards Lifescience Foundation, we have been able to hire an educational coordinator who is working all the agreements and will be able to buy services and make the program possible for our participants. We are looking forward to begin our collaboration and, once again, get our special population active and learning.
