Housing Program

LA CASA DE JUNNY, INC.

La Casa de AMPI, Inc.

As part of the innovative projects that AMPI has brought to the western part of Puerto Rico, one of the most beautiful, special and unique programs is the Assisted Living Program. This is composed of three homes for adults with developmental disabilities. This program is sponsored and administered by AMPI as part of the services to the owner’s organizations.

La Casa de Junny, Inc., La Casa de AMPI, Inc. and La Casa de Doña Here, Inc. are three independent corporations that offer safe and permanent housing to a total of 18 very low income adult people with intellectual disabilities. Under HUD Section 811, these housing facilities currently housed 13 adults with intellectual disabilities who receive a safe home and all the supportive services necessary to live a full and meaningful life.

Although the Assisted Housing Project has been our greatest achievement to date, it has also being AMPI’s most challenging program in terms of the economic and operational needs that are required to provide these services. This is because, for the most part, the residents are very low income thus making it very difficult to cover their care and their needs which are not covered by HUD.

The three homes are located in different residential areas on the city of Mayaguez. Two of them house women and one of them houses male residents. They all need adequate staff who can meet their needs. These can range from help with their basic needs at home to meal preparation and medical assistance.

AMPI’s greatest need for this program is financial support to cover the salaries of personnel who provides direct services to the residents. The Federal Housing Department, HUD, through a 40-year agreement with each housing owner organization, covers the administrative and maintenance needs of the physical facility as well as legal and operational needs for each home. However, it does not provide funding to cover the direct services required by the residents, who in turn, in order to qualify, have to be low-income people, so they cannot contribute much to cover their own expenses. This means that AMPI has to continuously seek funds in order to cover these costs for the staff serving residents 365 days a year. It has become an extremely complex economic burden for the entity and a truly magnificent labor of love. It is for this reason that most of the funds that AMPI receives through private and individual donations are aimed at covering these expenses.

As part of AMPI's support services to housing residents we must include:

  • Case management including coordination and accompaniment to medical appointments,

  • social appointments, prescribed medicine management,

  • behavioral management,

  • mental health services,

  • lab services and many other personal and individual needs of the residents.

  • Housekeeping services

  •  Assistance in personal grooming tasks, depending on the severity of the resident's condition

  • Buying and preparing food

  • Coordination of social activities and educational services

  •  Assistance in the development of independent living skills and personal behavioral management

  •  Monitoring and security at all times

  •  Transportation to educational, recreational and medical appointments, employment, etc.

  •  Coordination of external services, among others

The requirements to apply for housing in this program are as follows:

  • A certified developmental disability of a mild to moderate level.

  • Basic self-sufficiency in hygiene needs and personal management.

  • Absence of chronic mental health problems.

  • Absence of any violent history or use of drugs

  • Independent living potential.

  •  Not having a safe home or family that can take care of them.

  •  Qualify by income according to Federal Department of Housing (HUD) requirements.

  • Be over 21 years old.

This program was initially conceived by submitting a proposal to the Federal Department of Housing- Section 811 program for Assistive Housing for people with disabilities.
